Arrival and free time. Electric taxis, horse carts, and the first clear sight of the Matterhorn framed at the end of Bahnhofstrasse.

Gornergrat Bahn · 33 min here · Train 20 min

Europe's highest open-air cogwheel railway, running since 1898 and electric from the start. Climbs 1,469 m through larch forest and above the tree line. Sit on the right going up.

Rotenboden & Riffelsee · 40 min here · Train 20 min

Alight one stop early for the short walk to the Riffelsee, where the Matterhorn reflects in the lake on a windless morning. The single most photographed view in the Alps.

Gornergrat Summit · 1h 30m here · Train 10 min

Observation platform at 3,089 m, surrounded by 29 peaks above 4,000 m, with the Gorner Glacier below and Monte Rosa — Switzerland's highest point — opposite. The Kulmhotel observatory towers sit on the ridge behind.

Descent to Zermatt · 35 min here · Walk 10 min

Return leg, with the option to break the journey at Riffelberg.

Hinterdorf, Zermatt · 45 min here

The old quarter, where 16th- and 17th-century larch granaries stand on stone discs that kept the rats out. Sun-blackened timber, and a very different Zermatt from the main street.
