Grindelwald First Cliff Walk & Bachalpsee

Summer on the sunny side of Grindelwald: the First Cliff Walk cantilevered off the rock face, and the walk out to the Bachalpsee, where the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn stand upside down in the water.

What to expect
Grindelwald First faces south-west across the valley at the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, which means the light is on the mountains all afternoon and on you all day. The gondola climbs from the village to 2,168 metres. At the top, the First Cliff Walk runs a steel walkway around and out from the rock face, finishing on a platform that projects forty-five metres into the air with nothing beneath it. It takes about fifteen minutes to walk and rather longer to leave. The reason to stay is the Bachalpsee. An hour's walk on a broad, well-made path leads to a mountain lake at 2,265 metres that on a still morning holds a perfect reflection of the Schreckhorn and the Wetterhorn. It is among the most photographed lakes in the Alps and it earns it. The path is easy - families do it - but it is an hour each way and there is no shortcut back. Three optional descents run from the top station: a zip line, a mountain cart and a scooter, each covering a different stretch down to Schreckfeld and Bort. This is the summer half of the mountain. The winter product on the same slopes is ALP-CH-009.
