Walk east under the arcades. Six kilometres of them cover the old town, built out over the pavement from the 15th century onward so trade could carry on through Bernese winters. The fountains along the way date from the 1540s and each one tells a story.

The clock tower, once the western city gate. The astronomical clock built by Kaspar Brunner in 1530 sets a jester, a procession of bears and a crowing cock in motion four minutes before the hour, so the stop is timed to catch the performance rather than to arrive after it.

Bundesplatz & Bundesterrasse · 30 min di sini

Three minutes south of the tower the streets open onto Bundesplatz and the Federal Palace, seat of both chambers of parliament and the Federal Council. The domed centre block was completed in 1902; 26 fountain jets play across the square in front of it, one for each canton. Behind the building the Bundesterrasse looks south over the Aare, with the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau closing the view on a clear day, and the Marzilibahn funicular has been dropping from the terrace to the river since 1885.

Back up to the widest and grandest of the old streets. At number 49, on the second floor, Albert Einstein lived with his family while working at the patent office and published the special theory of relativity in 1905. The flat is preserved as he had it.

Bern Minster & Munsterplattform · 25 min di sini

Begun in 1421 and not finished until 1893, the Minster carries the tallest spire in Switzerland at just over 100 metres. Behind it the Munsterplattform terrace projects out on the old city wall, high above the river.

Untertorbrucke & Nydegg · 25 min di sini

Down to the water and across the Untertorbrucke, the oldest bridge in Bern and for three centuries the only crossing. The bear park sits on the far bank - bears have been kept in Bern since 1513 and are still on the city arms.

Rosengarten · 25 min di sini

A moderate climb to the terrace above the river. Bern's cemetery until 1877, it was replanted as a rose garden in 1913 and now holds more than 200 varieties. The panorama takes in the entire loop of the Aare and the red roofs inside it.

Finish at the viewpoint. Bus 10 runs from the gate back to the station in about ten minutes, or it is a twenty-minute walk downhill through the old town.
