The town hall square, ringed by arcaded houses, and the wooden sluice bridges that cross the two arms of the Aare. The sluices still regulate the level of Lake Thun, and the water below runs fast and glacier-green.

The main street's raised pavement is built across the roofs of the shops below, putting pedestrians a full storey above the traffic. Nothing else like it survives in Europe.

Up the covered stairway to the keep the Zahringens built around 1190. Four corner turrets, a knights' hall under the original roof timbers, and a tower view that runs the whole length of the lake to the Bernese Alps.

Schadau Park & landing stage · 30 min di sini

Walk out along the lake shore to the park and its 19th-century chateau. Time here for the Wocher Panorama, painted between 1809 and 1814 and the oldest surviving panorama painting in the world, before boarding.

East under the pyramid of the Niesen. Oberhofen Castle stands on its own jetty in the water, one of the most photographed buildings in the country, and the shoreline villages give way to the vineyards of the Spiez bay.

Disembark in the harbour. The castle above the bay has a Romanesque church beside it and a terrace over the vineyards; the walk up from the landing stage takes about ten minutes.
