East along the wooded shore. The turquoise comes from rock flour, glacial sediment ground fine enough to stay suspended and throw the light back; the lake is also one of the deepest and coldest in Switzerland.

Disembark at the village on its small peninsula, with the private Seeburg castle at the tip. Fishing boats, a stone jetty and steep lanes. The pier draws crowds since a Korean drama filmed here in 2019, so the village now charges a small fee at the turnstile.

Short crossing to the falls, which are visible from the water for most of the approach - fourteen cascades stacked up the hillside.

The funicular from the landing stage was built in 1879 and is the oldest in Europe. Above it the falls drop close to 500 metres in stages, with a footpath that passes behind the water. The grand hotel terrace makes the natural lunch stop.

Final leg to the head of the lake, with the Brienzer Rothorn rising behind the town.

The centre of Swiss woodcarving since the 1830s, with workshops still open along the main street. The steam cogwheel railway up the Rothorn has run since 1892 and departs from beside the landing stage.
