What to expect
Three thousand metres up, the floor turns beneath you. The TITLIS Rotair has been running since 1992 and was the first rotating cable car in the world: the cabin makes one complete turn during its five-minute crossing of the glacier, so nobody has to fight for a window. The day runs from Lucerne to Engelberg, an alpine village grown around a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120. Gondolas lift you past the mountain lake at Trubsee and out above the tree line to Stand at 2,428 metres, where you change for the summit. At the top is the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe's highest suspension bridge at 3,041 metres. A hundred metres long, a metre wide, five hundred metres of air underneath, and it moves when you walk on it. Below the surface, the Glacier Cave runs 150 metres into the ice at a depth of twenty metres, where compression turns the glacier deep blue. Outside, the summit terrace opens across the Bernese and Central Swiss Alps. The Ice Flyer chairlift crosses the crevasse field to the glacier park, a paid extra worth taking in clear weather. Warm clothing and sturdy shoes are essential. The Cliff Walk closes in high wind, and the summit runs far colder than the valley in every season.
